Brides Across America
NonprofitFounded in 2008 by Heidi Janson after reading about soldiers feeling forgotten overseas — Brides Across America has gifted over 28,000 free wedding dresses to military and first responder brides. Operation Wedding Gown events are held nationwide twice a year — around July 4th and Veterans Day — at partner bridal salons across the country, where qualifying brides are assisted by stylists and leave with a dress the same day. A BAA Outlet store in Andover, MA stocks 1,000+ gowns in sizes 00-24 starting at $99. Eligibility: the bride or fiance must be active duty or a veteran within the past 5 years, or a first responder. Valid military ID or documentation required. Registration opens on the BAA website before each event cycle.

Camp Lejeune Justice Act (PACT Act)
GovernmentCreated within the PACT Act of 2022, the Camp Lejeune Justice Act opened the first-ever legal pathway for veterans, civilians, and family members to file lawsuits against the federal government for toxic water exposure at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987. Nearly one million people were exposed to contaminated drinking water during this period — one of the worst water contamination events in U.S. history. The legal claim pathway is completely separate from VA disability benefits and does not affect VA benefit eligibility. Administered by the Navy and Department of Justice. Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
NonprofitCongressionally chartered veterans service organization, among the largest and oldest in the country, dedicated to veterans disabled in the line of duty and their families. Its nationwide corps of VA-accredited National Service Officers — often disabled veterans themselves — prepares, presents, and prosecutes VA disability claims and appeals completely free of charge to any veteran, member or not. DoD Warrior Games
GovernmentMulti-sport event for wounded, injured, or ill service members and veterans, organized by the U.S. Department of Defense and held annually since 2010 (paused only for the 2020-2021 pandemic). Designed to enhance recovery journeys outside traditional therapy settings by bringing the military community together for recovery in real time; a recent Games featured roughly 175 athletes competing across 11 adaptive sports over nine days. The event grew directly out of the Ride 2 Recovery 2009 Texas Challenge and in turn helped inspire the international Invictus Games. Athletes represent the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Special Operations Command, alongside international partner teams. A DoD program rather than an org a veteran joins directly — participation flows through each service's Warrior Care program.

NonprofitOne of the most innovative veteran entrepreneurship programs in the country — a "living business school" built around Dog Tag Bakery in Georgetown, Washington D.C. The five-month fellowship program equips veterans with service-connected disabilities, military spouses, and caregivers with the tools, education, and community to build resilience and find renewed purpose. Fellows earn a Certificate in Business Administration from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies. Combines equal parts classroom, bakery, community, and wellbeing. Program of the D'Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University — the original and most rigorous free entrepreneurship training program for post-9/11 veterans, launched in 2007. Now a national consortium of nine universities including UCLA, Texas A&M, Florida State, Purdue, UConn, and Syracuse. Three-phase model: online self-study (3 weeks), residential bootcamp at a partner university (8 days, all travel and lodging covered), and 12 months of follow-on technical assistance. Selective and competitive admissions. Zero cost to the veteran. Sibling program EBV-F serves military spouses and surviving spouses for home-based business launch.
