WWP was founded in 2003 when John Melia, himself a wounded veteran, started sending backpacks filled with supplies to injured service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. What began as a grassroots act of care grew into the nation's largest veteran service organization specifically focused on the post-9/11 generation. WWP has navigated significant controversy and organizational reform, emerging as one of the most transparent and accountable large veteran nonprofits.
