Scholarship and lifelong leadership program founded in 2008 to honor Pat Tillman, the NFL safety who left his career to serve as an Army Ranger and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. Directly funds active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses — including surviving spouses — pursuing full-time undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees at accredited U.S. institutions. The unrestricted award averages roughly $10,000 per year and covers tuition, fees, books, and living expenses without affecting GI Bill eligibility. Beyond money, Scholars join a lifelong national community with leadership summits, professional development, career support, and mini-grants for certifications and research. Selection is rigorous and values-based — service, scholarship, humble leadership, and impact — with about 60 chosen from roughly 2,000 applicants each year (a ~3% acceptance rate). Has invested more than $36 million and named over 1,000 Tillman Scholars across 160+ institutions. Apolitical, built on Pat Tillman's service values. Applications open December 1 and close February 1. Placed in Education as a direct scholarship to veterans and families rather than a capacity-building program.
