Onward Ops

A program by veterans for veterans — Onward Ops focuses on the critical 12-month window between leaving the military and reintegrating into civilian life, the period when suicide risk is three times higher than any other time. Led by Brig. Gen. (ret.) Mike Eastman, Onward Ops connects transitioning service members with trained volunteer sponsors from their destination community who check in weekly, provide local knowledge, and make sure no one navigates the transition alone. Free planning tools, a personalized transition dashboard, Google Workspace, and access to benefits and resources complete the model. On track to reach 100,000 veterans annually by 2026 — roughly half of all separating service members. Available to active duty, Reserve, and National Guard members, and veterans within 90 days of separation. Partners include the Veteran Sponsorship Initiative (VSI). Veterans with a transition sponsor are 63% more likely to avoid crisis.
