GI Bill (VA Education Benefits)

Four distinct chapters serve different veteran populations — not one-size-fits-all. Post-9/11 GI Bill (Ch. 33): covers 100% in-state public tuition or up to $29,920/yr at private schools, monthly housing allowance, $1,000/yr books stipend — requires 90+ days post-9/11 service. Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30): flat monthly payment directly to the veteran, good for flexibility. Chapter 35: survivors and dependents of veterans permanently disabled or killed in service. Chapters 1606/1607: National Guard and Reserve members. Benefits are transferable to dependents. Maximum 36 months entitlement. Do not assume you understand this from TAPs — ask a VSO or education counselor.
